23 hrs before the start of the 2011 White Mountains 100, Ed's words were 50% welcomed.
I'm still not sure why I'm going to competitively ride 100 miles on my bike, which I probably haven't even done cumulatively since I got it earlier this winter. No training - great idea, Josh. Awesome.
Fortunately, I have a personal professional bike mechanic that installed my new brakes and saved me hours of frustration and sleep deprivation last night. A huge thanks to JR Lafleur! Not really sure why I need brakes, though, with my physical state and the fact that I'm riding single speed, i.e., going slow and steady.
Alas, I'm feeling pretty good about the race and think I can actually give a pretty solid performance, finishing in a respectable time and moderately strong. I'll be riding for all the single speeders out there, as I'll undeniably be the 'only one on only one' gear, unless someone else's bike breaks! Like the sticker on the chain stay of my bike says, Fat & Single = Ride Me Hard. That is exactly what I'll have to do.
So, my plan is to be the tortoise, riding 8 am Sunday to 6 am Monday (22 hrs).
Stay in motion with high RPMs and low energy output. 'Rest' while pedaling, because "it's like fun, but different." -Steve House
Oh yeah, I'm not bringing a sleeping bag.
